THE CHURCH IN SARDIS - LIVING BUT DEAD
(Nuggets from Revelation 3:1)
John the Beloved wrote a letter to the seven churches in Asia Minor under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit on the Island of Patmos, and their case was such a critical one.
The reputation of the church of Sardis was that it appeared to be alive, but unfortunately, that did not match its true condition. In other words, their case was that of HYPOCRISY and PRETENCE. They were living and relying on the past glory, which means that they were once vibrant and spiritually sound, but over time, they degenerated into a state of complacency and comatose.
Revelation 3:1-4 gives us a sneak peek of the categories of people in the church of Sardis:
- The Dead
- The Ready to Die
- The ALIVE and UNDEFILED
These same categories of Christians are in the different Christian communities and congregations today.
If Jesus Christ our Lord were to write a letter to the Church of today, what kind of messages would we be receiving?
We have the DEAD in the congregations today, though physically alive, but SPIRITUALLY DEAD; they are those Christians who pay more attention to the flesh and satisfy the lusts thereof, they are BACKSLIDERS and SECRET SINNERS, POTENTIAL REPROBATES.
There are those who are READY TO DIE, they are the UNINTENTIONAL CHRISTIANS, CARELESS, INDIFFERENT and INCORRIGIBLE. They know they have problems, they know their hearts are not right with God, but they pretend as though all is well. These are likened to the five FOOLISH VIRGINS; What a risky state!
The next category of Christians in Sardis were the ALIVE and UNDEFILED. These are likened to the five WISE VIRGINS, the RIGHTEOUS, HOLY, SPOTLESS, BLAMELESS and FAULTLESS Christians, TRUE AMBASSADORS of Christ; they are the RAPTURE-READY and HEAVEN-BOUND.
Our Lord Jesus warned the Church in Sardis through John the Beloved to wake up and live out the faith they professed. If not, He would come at an unexpected time to hold them to account.
Their Faith was a NOMINAL kind of faith and just as it was with the Church in Sardis, so many Christians today are practicing NOMINAL CHRISTIANITY, and this is a serious threat to the universal body of Christ. Many profess the name of Christ, but their lives reveal that they are enemies of Christ.
The root of the problem of these Christians in Sardis was they had gotten so self-sufficient in their own minds that they didn’t feel they needed the Holy Spirit anymore. They felt they had arrived and therefore could do everything on their own, which is a very dangerous place to be.
This warning applies to us in this era - THE MODERN DAY CHURCH.
If the church in Sardis could have such issues, how much more the church of this present day?
WHAT CATEGORY ARE YOU IN THE CHURCH OF TODAY? DEAD, READY TO DIE OR ALIVE AND UNDEFILED?
This is HOLINESS CHALLENGE
